Success has come very quickly for the sisters HAIM, and by all accounts they’re handling it well, still flush with joy. And other than “Save” & “Forever”, the excursions the band does is slowing things down even more, such as the over-produced procession “My Song 5”. The production-over-variety makes the songs largely run together, save for “Don’t Save Me” and the one other rhythmic piece, “Forever”, not unenjoyably, but not exceptionally. The songs aren’t upbeat, but are danceable, with even a nighttime eighties guitar solo in opener “Falling”. The rest of Days Are Gone obviously couldn’t match that, and doesn’t, as the group mostly hews away from their killer rhythm for the kind of female-led synth-pop loss that was coming out of mainstream radio back in the eighties. Now I’m not going to delve into the politically correct or incorrect guidelines of what is or isn’t considered sexist in the music industry and/or if that’s even an issue, because a) I am bound to upset someone, which is not the reason I’ve.

“Don’t Save Me” was such a success thanks to its great catch & rhythm & more, plus the obvious appeal of ladies Alana, Danielle, and Este Haim. Embarking on this review, I was surprised to read one day that Haim claim to have struggled to be seen as more than just a girl band. Debut full-length Days Are Gone isn’t “Don’t Save Me”, and certainly isn’t ‘indie’, but it isn’t a massive comedown. Los Angeles sister trio HAIM had that hit this year in “Don’t Save Me”, without much else to their name.

Today, one hit can be even bigger thanks to the internet, and that matters even more when people aren’t buying albums (thanks to the internet…). It used to be that such acts burnt-out quick, and was derogatively referred to as ‘one-hit wonders’ later on (or even during their brief fame). Days Are Gone is one of the best albums of the year, which you should definitely listen to.A single single can make a career more than ever these days. Their love for their craft shines through on the album. Haim are incredibly talented musicians and writers. Driving the song with mainly keyboards shows the girls can create intensely, hypnotic music with any form of instrument. It’s simultaneously powerful and peaceful. Reviving past feeling on a previous love and investigating its break down is not a theme covered in many popular songs. It’s the ultimate “What If” song, which makes it all the more perfect. Lyrically, the track has urgency, which is complimented by the quick paced guitar. If I Could Change Your Mind is trance an inducing R&B wonder. Este is certainly a bass genius her skills surpass that of any other bass player in this generation of musician. Their sonic diversity is mind blowing they are able to leap from shredding sophisticated guitar licks to calming keyboard becoming the driving force of the songs. The 80s keyboard vibe is a flowing theme in the tracks, it is beautifully subtle and revives each track.

Every detail in the song fits, even the slightest cowbell sounds fit perfectly into the track, heightening how meticulously perfect every second of every song had to be. Their musicianship and genuine passion for their art sets them apart from today’s world of musicians. Individually as musicians Este, Danielle and Alana take their talents to a whole new degree of incredible. Este, Danielle and Alana Haim have since evolved, playing music with other musicians, notably Danielle who toured with the Strokes front man Julian Casablancas, and finally with each other to form Haim.ĭays Are Gone is Haim’s meticulous debut album, with its vibey R&B production and intricate guitar work. The Los Angeles sister act from the San Fernando Valley in California began creating music with their parents in their family band Rockinhaim. They have created such a buzz with their distinguishing sound, blazing onto the scene in early 2012 with their first single Forever.
